Imperial College London

Imperial College London is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost institutions for medical research, consistently ranking among the top universities in the UK and globally for clinical, pre-clinical, and health sciences. It is home to internationally recognised research centres that focus on areas such as infectious diseases, cancer, genomics, neurology, and public health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Imperial played a pivotal role in vaccine development and epidemiological modelling, leading one of the UK’s most advanced mRNA vaccine programs.

Within the UK, Imperial is a cornerstone of medical innovation. It hosts one of the country’s largest NIHR Biomedical Research Centres, bridging academia and the NHS to drive translational research. Its integration with the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, one of the UK's largest academic health science centres, enables rapid application of research into clinical practice. The university also consistently attracts substantial funding from organisations such as UKRI, the Wellcome Trust, and major global pharmaceutical companies, supporting groundbreaking work in AI, personalised medicine, and digital health.

In essence, Imperial College London is not only a centre of academic excellence but also a vital force behind real-world medical advancements that influence both national healthcare systems and global medical innovation.

Description

In this video, we sit down with Prof. Payam Barnaghi (Chair in Machine Intelligence Applied to Medicine, Imperial College London / Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Machine Intelligence for Medicine) to explore how they have been using the stack8s.ai MVP platform since early 2024. The teams share their insights on how this cutting-edge AI platform has transformed their research and analytics workflows.

Imperial College London Scales Medical AI Research with Stack8s Infrastructure Orchestration

At Imperial College London, the Brain Sciences department is pushing the boundaries of how artificial intelligence can be used to transform healthcare. From paediatric medicine to dementia research and independent living, the team builds advanced machine learning and large language models using proprietary and anonymised healthcare data. But as their ambitions grew, so did their infrastructure challenges.

Professor of Machine Intelligence at Imperial, who also co-directs the new School of Convergence Science - explained the situation:

"Our models are increasingly complex and data-heavy. We're now training large language models from scratch using real-world clinical data. To support that, we needed powerful and dedicated GPU compute. Using shared university clusters wasn’t viable, and conventional cloud options were simply unaffordable - we were looking at tens of thousands per month."

The Shift to Dedicated Infrastructure

To overcome this, the team made a strategic investment in building their own high-performance computing environment. With funding secured through a national research infrastructure programme, they deployed 10 custom-built servers, each fitted with dual A100 GPUs, massive RAM, and local storage - purpose-built for AI and deep learning workloads.

But raw hardware was just the beginning.

“Once we had the machines, we quickly hit another roadblock. We needed a platform to actually manage the environment, share the GPUs, and ensure secure access across researchers and departments. We tried to deploy open source tooling ourselves - it didn’t work. The drivers were complex, and we couldn’t get reliable orchestration.”

A Turning Point with Stack8s

That’s when they engaged with Stack8s.

“What impressed us was how quickly stack8s was able to deploy a complete orchestration layer tailored to our environment. Suddenly, our researchers could SSH in or launch Jupyter notebooks and access all our GPUs without worrying about how resources were being managed. It just worked.”

The platform gave the team:

  • A single control layer across all their on-prem GPUs
  • Private, secure, encrypted sharing of compute between users and labs
  • Built-in support for tools like MLflow, MinIO, and model registries
  • A self-serve marketplace to deploy large language models like LLaMA in minutes

Today, over 20 researchers across Imperial - and additional collaborators at partner hospitals - access the environment to run AI models on medical, genomic, and imaging datasets. Stack8s manages resource allocation, access control, and orchestration behind the scenes.

“We didn’t want to be involved in infrastructure complexity. Stack8s takes care of it, and every time our needs change, they adapt the platform. One colleague said, ‘This feels too good to be true’ - but it’s been true from day one.”

Avoiding Lock-in, Embracing Flexibility

Vendor lock-in wasn’t just a concern - it was a blocker. For some of their data, regulatory and ethical constraints prevent it from ever leaving their local network.

“With Stack8s, we’re not tied to any black box solution. The software is transparent, the deployment is under our control, and we have the freedom to shape it how we need.”

As the team looks ahead to more large language model projects, the flexibility of the platform continues to pay dividends.

“Sometimes our research requires a fast turnaround - if we can deploy a model like LLaMA from a ready-made template, we save days of configuration. That’s time we can spend on actual research instead of infrastructure.”

Research at Speed, Without Compromise

Imperial’s investment in local AI infrastructure, combined with Stack8s’ orchestration, is enabling them to accelerate breakthroughs in medical research - while keeping control of cost, security, and operational complexity.

For institutions dealing with sensitive data and cutting-edge workloads, Stack8s offers something rare: the ability to scale AI without sacrificing control.

“It’s been a fantastic partnership. We’ve saved time, saved money, and gained a platform that grows with us.”

— Prof. Payam Barnaghi- Chair in Machine Intelligence Applied to Medicine at Imperial College London

Blueknight Ventures

AI powered M&A Advisor using stack8s

"Stack8s has been a transformative partner for us at Blueknight Ventures. As we developed our AI-driven M&A platform, we faced escalating cloud costs across services like Supabase for auth and data, LLM APIs for deal analysis, and multiple backend environments for testing. The financial overhead was unsustainable and slowing our delivery.

With Stack8s, we reduced our infrastructure spend by over £50,000 annually and accelerated our go-to-market timeline from six months to just four weeks. Their platform enabled us to deploy LLMs on dedicated GPUs at a fraction of the cost, host our Postgres and Supabase stack internally, and rapidly provision dev and test environments, all with exceptional reliability.

The performance and affordability of their infrastructure exceeded our expectations. Stack8s gave our engineering team the flexibility and control we needed, free from hyperscaler lock-in. The fact that it’s all powered by 100% renewable energy was an added and welcome benefit.

Equally important, the Stack8s team has been outstanding, highly professional, deeply skilled, and incredibly responsive throughout our journey. Their support and technical expertise gave us the confidence to scale quickly and securely."

Electrek Explorer

Electrek Explorer - Electric Bike Exploring Platform - Scotland

"Stack8s gave us the breathing room. As a platform focused on nature, wellness, and exploration, our backend was getting weighed down by the cost of running AI models, media-rich POIs, and location intelligence at scale. Stack8s helped us trim over £20k from our annual infra spend and sped up our rollout from half a year to just a few weeks. The infrastructure’s fast, stable, and surprisingly affordable - and the fact it runs entirely on renewables aligns perfectly with our mission."
